WMU volleyball losses in the MAC tournament semifinals versus Bowling Green University

Bowling Green rallies to defeat Western Michigan in five sets in the Mid-American Conference’s tournament semifinal (21-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 15-10).

BGSU came out firing; an ace by Bowling Green’s Danielle Tonyan made it 5-2 BGSU. WMU charged back, taking the lead 8-7 thanks to a Stephenee Yancy kill. The Broncos began to catch their stride. Kills by Ali Gossen and Terin Norris gave WMU a 16-12 advantage. A kill from BGSU’s Tonyan tied the game at 21-21. BGSU wouldn’t score another point. A Gossen kill, followed by an ace by Caroline Rose, and two Jessica Brown kills iced the set for WMU 25-21.

WMU and BGSU split the next two sets. With the Broncos now leading the match, they looked to close out BGSU in the fourth set.

The Broncos seized control half way through set four, a Yancy kill gave them an 18-12 lead. Errors and a kill by BGSU’s Paige Penrod pull the Falcons within three, 18-15. A Yancy Kill extended the Broncos lead to 21-16, but the Falcons rallied to take the lead 23-21 after sloppy hitting and service errors by WMU. A Kaitlyn Skinner block won the set for BGSU 25-23.

BGSU carried the momentum into the fifth set. A kill by BGSU’s Tonyan gave the Falcons a 6-0 advantage. A Brown attack error pushed BGSU ahead 8-2. WMU tried to rally getting within three, 8-5, but that’s as close as they would get. A kill by BGSU’s Penrod gave them a 13-8 lead. A Lindsey Butterfield kill clinch the match for the Falcons 15-10.

Bowling Green was propelled by a stellar defensive game. Out blocking Western Michigan 19.5 to five. They held Western Michigan to a .103 hitting percentage.

Brown had a great game in a lost. She had a match high 22 kills, while hitting .429 percent. Yancy added 12 kills and Gossen added 11. Norris recorded a match high 56 assist. Lena Oliver tallied a match high 25 digs.

This lost drops Western Michigan to 21-10. The Broncos will travel back home to face off against Dayton, Friday Nov. 23rd at 5 p.m.

Bowling Green will face off against Northern Illinois in the MAC Champion Sunday at 1 p.m.
