Western Michigan University softball began their season at the Kajikawa Classic with a game against No. 5 Oregon, Feb. 07 at Tempe Sports Complex in Arizona with a loss, 0-8.
The Broncos had only three hits in the contest. It wasn’t strike outs that kept the Broncos down, they only had five. They hit the ball, but not hard or to the right spot. They had 12 pop outs and left five runners stranded.
Feb. 8 the Broncos battled Cal Poly to a 3-2 victory. They put up 11 hits coming from seven different Broncos. Allyson Kus got the win.
Later that day the Broncos took a loss against Kentucky, 1-12. They had four hits, nine strike outs, 12 pop outs and left six runners on base.
The Broncos suffered two consecutive losses Feb. 9, first against San Diego State, 1-5, and then against Arizona State, 0-7. Becca Shemberger and Allyson Kus each recorded a loss.
Ending the Classic with another loss to Cal State Northridge, 1-6, Feb. 10, the Broncos headed home to prepare for the next tournament, the Holiday Classic in Bowling Green, Ky.
The Broncos opened the Holiday Classic with a win against Dayton, 7-6. They pulled through with 11 hits and solid pitching from both Becca Shemberger and Allyson Kus. Kus gets the win.
WMU lost the next three games of the tournament. They fell to Pittsburg, 3-4, Western Kentucky, 2-5, and South Dakota State, 0-1. The Broncos put together 14 hits over this three game losing streak.
In their final game of the tournament the Broncos defeated Valparaiso, 2-1.
WMU softball currently sits at 3-8.
Melissa Palmer leads the Broncos with a batting average of .324. Emma Bogart and Diana Patterson both sit at a .286 average, tied for second.
Allyson Kus has a team low 4.64 earned run average. Becca Shemberger has an era of 5.16.
The season continues this Friday in Tampa, Fla. The Broncos will start off the University of South Florida Under Armour Invitational against Georgia State.
