The Western Michigan University men’s basketball team withstood a late rally from High Point University Sunday to defeat the Panthers 70-64.
Saturday’s contest was the second meeting between these two teams this season. The Broncos defeated the Panthers by a single point on Nov. 29, 54-53.
Nate Hutcheson led the way for WMU with his 19 points despite only taking seven shots from the field. He was 4-7 shooting and 9-12 from the free-throw line.
Shayne Whittington added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Broncos while Darius Paul recorded his second double-double of the season with ten points and ten rebounds.
WMU controlled play for most of the game. With 12:10 left in the game the Broncos had a 25-point lead. High Point would rally from that point and get to within four points with just five seconds remaining. Late free throws would seal the deal for Western Michigan improving their record to 7-3.
“It was almost as if we’d checked out,” said Head Coach Steve Hawkins in his post-game press conference. “It was almost as if we had won the game after 35 minutes and, you know, obviously we hadn’t.”
With the victory WMU is currently in first place in the Mid American Conference’s West division. Three more games are scheduled before conference play begins on Jan. 9, 2013 in Akron, OH.
The Broncos will be in Pittsburgh, Penn. to take on Duquesne this Wednesday at 7 p.m.
