WMU hockey scores five straight goals, defeats MSU, 5-2 Friday night

The No. 8 Western Michigan Broncos defeated Michigan State, 5-2, Friday night in East Lansing, Mich.

The Broncos tallied goals from five different players, including three goals in the second period to come away with a victory, keeping them in the hunt for the final CCHA regular season title, for now.

MSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 9:19 in the first period with Brent Darnell’s tenth goal of the season.  They converted on a power play opportunity after WMU goalie Frank Slubowski initially made three saves, but Darnell grabbed a rebound and slammed it home.

Ben Warda scored eight minutes later to tie the game at one.  In the second period, Shane Berschbach, Nolan LaPorte, and Chase Balisy each scored goals giving WMU a 4-1 lead heading into the third period.

Colton Hargrove added to the lead 5:45 into the third period putting WMU up, 5-1.  Tanner Sorenson scored a late power play goal for the Spartans.

Both teams play again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. in East Lansing.
