The Western Michigan University women’s basketball team started strong against the University of Albany at home Sunday afternoon, but was not able to maintain their early dominance and fell to the Great Danes of Albany by a score of 68-54.

Both Head Coach Shane Clipfell and starting senior point guard Aurielle Anderson were quick to mention defensive execution as the key to the loss.

Albany had a significant height advantage, especially at the center position, and was able to use that to outscore the broncos 32 to 16 in the paint.

“Were not going to have anybody that size, fortunately, I don’t think from here on,” said Clipfell.

The Broncos have played three games so far this season and two of them have come against teams that won their conferences last year.  The women are 1-1 in these games and 1-2 overall.

There was no lack of effort on the part of the Broncos as they were seen scrambling for loose balls with just seconds left to play and the score well out of reach.

“When you love the game of basketball you should want to do anything, any hustle points to get the ball,” said Anderson.

There was nothing the Great Danes did to surprise Clipfell and the Broncos, it was simply a matter of consistent play on defense, according to Anderson and Clipfell.

“We knew everything that they were going to do we just need to do a better job executing defensively,” said Clipfell.

Corie Buchanan was the only Bronco to reach double digits in scoring as she contributed 10 points.  Julia Henson added 9 points for WMU going 3-8 from beyond three-point range.

The women’s next game will be in the Northern Arizona Thanksgiving tournament.  They will take on the University of Northern Arizona Friday Nov. 23 at 4:05 p.m.
